For our unit of inquiry, each environment group prepared a “traveler” to endure the challenges of their particular environment. Each group prepared a few adaptations to help their traveler with locomotion, camouflage, food, or protection. The challenge of this project was that the design of the “traveler” needed to mimic adaptations of animals that lived in that environment. For example, the arctic group gave their traveler a reversible white and brown coat to camouflage in winter and spring – just like a snowy owl’s feathers. The savanna group gave their traveler very hard shoes to wear to protect their feet – just like an elephant’s hooves. The desert group gave their traveler a shovel to carry to help them dig in the ground and stay cool – just like a fennec fox. The rainforest group gave their traveler a sticky rope to catch food – just like a chameleon’s tongue. You’ll get to hear more of their great ideas at our Expo on Wednesday, December the 18th. Ask your child what special clothes or tools they gave they traveler. They are really enjoying this project! Here we are working on our travelers:
